INFORMATION, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Jenfan Muswere, has called for the creation of a safe working environment for women in the media.

Speaking at a Friedrich Nauman Foundation conference dedicated to fighting sexual harassment of women in media at work, Minister Muswere said that the Constitution provided for the protection of journalists’ rights and that this should be respected.

The Government was committed to eliminating sexual harassment and ensuring that the rights of Zimbabwean women were upheld. The Minister urged young journalists to not just break the glass ceiling, but to smash it, using their hard work, principles and morals to effect change in the industry.

“No one is above the law. In terms of journalism, we want to make sure the rights of journalists are protected and advanced.

“The Constitution is the supreme law, so constitutional rights should be respected

“It is Government policy to liquidate sexual harassment activities in newsrooms in order to support every girl child and every Zimbabwean.

“We want a safe and secure workplace for every Zimbabwean,” said Minister Muswere.

President Mnangagwa had appointed women in key Government positions because history shows that women’s organisations do better and there is little or no corruption.

“We are all born from women, so women are important and special to us,” he said.
