Zimbabwe’s women leaders are making an impact at the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Retreat in Liberia where they are attending the 6th Intergenerational Leadership Retreat expected to tackle critical issues affecting women across Africa.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Councillor Chioniso Michelle Murinda and the co-chairs of AWLN in Zimbabwe are attending the retreat. They are representing the country at the high-profile event, organised by the African Union and UN Women.

The retreat’s theme is: “Empowering the next generation of women leaders in a Beijing +30 era: Paving the way for a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all.” It highlights the importance of women’s leadership in shaping Africa’s future.

The delegation’s engagement would explore AWLN’s six pillars, encompassing governance, climate action, economic empowerment, health, peace and security.

These areas were vital for creating opportunities and addressing challenges that affected African women.

Minister Mutsvangwa was expected to lead discussions on governance and politics. Drawing on her extensive experience as a gender champion and Government leader, she was expected to address the hurdles and emerging opportunities for women in these spheres.

Her presentation would offer insights into advancing women’s roles in governance and highlighting strategies to enhance their political participation across Africa.

Minister Mutsvangwa would share her personal journey, emphasising the progress she has achieved as a gender advocate and key Government official in Zimbabwe, inspiring African women and girls.

Meanwhile, Cllr Murinda, a trailblazer in Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, would lead a critical session on agriculture and climate change.

In light of the pressing challenges posed by climate change, Cllr Murinda will be calling for urgent climate action, especially in agriculture, which is a lifeline for many African women.
