The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, through its inspectorate division, has carried out 5,059 workplace inspections out of a target of 5,343 across the country as of September this year.
Of these inspections, 217 were conducted specifically in the mining sector.
The Ministry’s mandate includes ensuring compliance with national labour laws, promoting fair labour practices, and enforcing occupational safety and health (OSH) standards. This is achieved through its own labour officers and inspectors appointed under the National Social
Security Authority (NSSA) Act, a key agency under the Ministry’s oversight.
“A total of 217 workplace inspections were conducted in the mining sector from January 2025 to September 2025 in the 10 provinces while a total of 47 meetings were held to educate, enforce and monitor compliance in relation to provisions of laws governing activities in the mining industry,” the Ministry stated.
Matabeleland North recorded the highest number of mining inspections at 76, followed by Matabeleland South with 35 inspections. Mashonaland West had 32, Midlands 28, Mashonaland Central 18, Mashonaland East 17, Masvingo six, while Manicaland and Bulawayo had three and two inspections respectively.
