A 11-YEAR-OLD girl from Gwanda, Matabeleland South committed suicide by drowning herself following a misunderstanding with an eight-year-old cousin over sugar.

The minor from Silikwe Village, under Chief Masuku, was found floating in Manzamhlophe Dam at around 11am on Wednesday.

She left home at around 4pm on Monday.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway. He said the now deceased allegedly had a misunderstanding with her cousin when she arrived home from school resulting in her decision to take her life.

“We received a report of sudden death by drowning of a 11-year-old girl who allegedly threw herself into Manzamhlophe Dam on Monday afternoon.

“The minor arrived from school at around 4pm and had a misunderstanding with her eight-year-old cousin over sugar. This did not go down well with her, and she disappeared from home,” said Chief Insp Ndebele.

On noting that the minor was missing, at around 6pm her grandfather (60) who had been away from home, alerted neighbours and they searched for the girl with no luck.

“The following day at around 11am, a 11-year-old from the village informed the now deceased’s grandfather that Nkomo had passed by her homestead and notified her that she was going to kill herself at the dam.

“The old man informed other villagers and they went to search for her at the dam but only discovered her sandals that were floating,” he said.

The matter was reported to police who attended the scene.

Her body was discovered floating on Wednesday morning and was retrieved.
