Missing funds scandal rocks Highlanders’ operations

A financial scandal has plunged Highlanders into chaos, with Chief Executive Officer Brian Moyo suspended amid allegations of fraudulent player transfers. The club now faces a tumultuous period, as an investigation into discrepancies surrounding the acquisition of two players from Bulawayo Chiefs exposes potential corruption and serious mismanagement.

The heart of the controversy lies in the reported shortfall of US$5  000 in the transfer fees. While Bulawayo Chiefs were allegedly owed US$23,000, internal records indicate Highlanders paid only US$18,000, triggering suspicions of deliberate financial manipulation. This significant discrepancy has rocked the club’s foundations, casting a shadow over its operations and raising serious questions about the integrity of its financial dealings.

Further investigations revealed that two separate invoices were drawn up during the transaction involving Bulawayo Chiefs. An invoice for the full amount of US$23 000 was submitted internally at Highlanders, while Bulawayo Chiefs received a corresponding invoice for only US$18 000.

This inconsistency has triggered alarm bells within Highlanders’ executive, with suspicions of deliberate financial manipulation now under scrutiny.

The alleged fraudulent deal has also drawn in Andrew Mandigora, the administrator at Bulawayo Chiefs, who, according to reports, was involved in the distribution of the missing funds. Moyo and Mandigora are believed to have shared a portion of the misappropriated money, with Moyo allegedly receiving US$2  000 from the deal and Mandigora receiving US$3 000.

When contacted for comment, Mandigora referred the inquiry to Highlanders’ executive before abruptly hanging up. Efforts to reach members of the Highlanders executive team have been unsuccessful.

The controversy reached its peak during a joint meeting of Highlanders’ board and executive committee on Thursday evening, where the decision to suspend Moyo was made. The club’s chairman, Kenneth Mhlophe, confirmed the suspension but refused to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

“We have suspended the CEO pending investigations, and that is all I can say at this stage,” Mhlophe told Saturday Chronicle.

Internal sources suggest that Mandigora has since returned a portion of the money and apologised to the club’s owner, though the full scale of the financial anomaly remains unclear. Highlanders’ officials have indicated that the investigation into the matter is continuing, with disciplinary and possibly legal action to follow.

The case has cast a shadow over the club’s operations and raised concerns about the integrity of transfer dealings. With a full investigation underway, both fans and stakeholders will be closely watching how Highlanders handles the aftermath of what could be a significant blow to the club’s image.
