A BULAWAYO man is having difficulties walking after he was assaulted by a mob that accused him of stealing groceries from a city woman.
Thabani Moyo, 31, of Gwabalanda suburb became a victim of mob justice after he allegedly robbed Sibusisiwe Dube, 49, while in the company of an accomplice Sevious Ndlovu, 33, who fled the scene.
The two suspected robbers were later arrested and yesterday, the pair appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Sheunesu Matova facing a charge of robbery.
They were remanded in custody to August 19 for trial.
Prosecuting, Kingstone Mkanganwi said Ndlovu and Moyo robbed a woman of her valuables including the groceries she had bought for her family.
“The two robbed Dube of her valuables and threatened her before they tried to strangle her,” he said.
The court heard that on Sunday at around 7PM near Fusi Primary School in Gwabalanda, Dube was on her way home when she met the two. They threatened her and took her handbag, white jersey and a cellphone and then tried to strangle her.
Dube screamed for help and members of the public responded.
Moyo was caught, but Ndlovu fled the scene leaving his accomplice in trouble.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Moyo’s arrest.
Further investigations led to Ndlovu’s arrest.
The two pleaded not guilty and Moyo told the court that police also assaulted him and he was in need of medical attention.
“I was assaulted by a mob with sticks on my head. The police who arrested me also assaulted me and now I have difficulties in walking. Can I be remanded out of custody so that I get medical help?” he said.
The magistrate turned down the request.
