The Zimbabwe Mobile Sanitation Association (ZMSA) has deployed mobile toilets in selected parts of Harare’s central business district to supplement the city council’s strained facilities as severe water shortages continue to affect the city.
A major water pipe burst has crippled water supply to the CBD and surrounding areas, thereby forcing the closure of several public toilets.
“City of Harare would like to inform residents that there has been a major pipe burst on our water line from Warren Control to Alexandra Park reservoirs,” reads the local authority’s statement.
“The fault is at Corner Sam Nujoma and Herbet Chitepo Avenue. For us to carry out repairs efficiently, we must close it, thus cutting water supply to the CBD and Avenues areas. This will also affect the eastern suburbs. ”
Repairs were expected to be completed by the end of day yesterday.
ZMSA president, Mr Boston Muteya said they are committed to improving sanitation conditions in the city centre.
“Our goal is to prevent disease outbreaks and discourage people from using alleys and open spaces as makeshift toilets,” Mr Muteya said.
“We have sufficient mobile toilets to serve the CBD and complement existing facilities.”
