MOKOOMBA have turned their focus to the United States and want to be BIG IN AMERICA.

The Tonga group are in the US for a month-long tour, which gets underway today in Williamstown Town, Massachusetts.

This will be their fifth time touring the US, after their maiden visit in 2013.

A series of shows have been lined up in New York, Miami, Vermont,  Indianapolis and Los Angeles.

The month-long tour of the US ends on April 28.

The major highlights of the tour will be the group’s performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Mokoomba will also hold other performances at the Festival International de Lousiane, which will run from April 26-28, in Los Angeles.

Group spokesperson and manager, Marcus Gora, said:

“The boys have arrived safely in the US and I will be joining them on Tuesday.

“This will be their fifth time performing in the US after they made their breakthrough in 2013.

“The band last did a US tour in 2019. The tour in 2020 and 2021 had to be postponed because of Covid-19 and we lost some shows but some were pushed to 2024.

“We are happy to be back in the US to perform and share the best of music and culture from Zimbabwe.”

He added:

“The band has been working hard, rehearsing a lot and learning from other local bands that are doing well now and those that have come before us.

“We are going to be promoting our latest album ‘Tusona:Tracing the Sand.’

“The group will be promoting remixes done by Jackknife Lee, which were released on 29 March, 2024 – Tamvela Mama, Balimukondo and Tamvela Mama, an opening prayer.”

Gora believes originality and authenticity have worked in their favour.

“We have been working hard and we are only getting rewards after years of hard work.

“The group has been doing well on the international scene for years due to originality and authenticity,” he said.

Mokoomba breakthrough came after they won the Music Crossroads inter-regional finals in Malawi in 2009.

The group has also been working on winning the hearts of locals on home turf where they are less appreciated.

Last year, they toured Europe and made an impression in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
