match against former European champions Manchester United.
Zhuwawo, the 2009 Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League Soccer Star of the Year, is enjoying his career at Usuthu and will forever cherish Wednesday night’s game, which they lost 1-0 to the 19-time England champions.
Three Zimbabweans, including national team captain Taupwa Kapini and centreback Carrington Nyadombo, featured in the match and gave a good account despite losing 1-0 to a Federico Macheda 20th minute strike.
Despite the Red Devils leaving behind some of their stars like Wayne Rooney, Nani, Patrice Evra, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones, AmaZulu drew satisfaction by holding their forte against one of the world’s all-star teams.
Sir Alex Ferguson still managed to bring a strong team, which is a mixture of youth and experience, captained by veteran Rio Ferdinand.
“It was a great feeling playing against Manchester United,” said Zhuwawo.
“The game is worth remembering because it’s once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play against those players and see where you are as a footballer. “The greatest moment was when we had them on the back foot whilst we were dictating the pace of the match.
“The atmosphere of the crowd was magnificent because it’s every player’s dream to be watched by a full stadium expressing his talent on the field of play.”
Zhuwawo said AmaZulu were actually aiming to cause an upset rather than going into the game to minimise damage.
They last time Manchester United were in South Africa they hammered Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 and many had anticipated a bigger margin against Usuthu.
But to their credit, AmaZulu were no pushovers.
“They are one of the biggest teams in the world,” he said.
“When you are playing against those big teams you are bound to have stage fright but as soon as the game starts that just fades away.
“I don’t think I put up my best performance since we are still at pre-season so am still working on many aspects of my game.
“But the result mattered because in every game we play we aim to win so that as a team we instill that winning mentality,” said Zhuwawo.
AmaZulu are hoping for better fortunes this season under new coach Roger Palmgren who has been given a target to fight for a top-four finish and to win at least one cup title.
Zhuwawo said the match gave them the opportunity to see which direction the club might take this year ahead of the new season.
AmaZulu also got words of advice from the international stars, which they hope to put into practice.
“Rio (Ferdinand) said we have a good team and if we had managed to utilise our chances we might have won.
“We learnt to keep possession and to play our normal game no matter who our opponents are and to take our chances at goal,” said Zhuwawo.
