adminA money changer who defrauded a Harare woman of 490 British pounds will spend an effective six months in jail.
Farai Manonga, a foreign currency trader at the Roadport, pleaded guilty to stealing the money he was given to convert into Zimbabwe dollars in 2004.
Harare magistrate Mr Paidamoyo Mukumbiri yesterday sentenced Manonga to one year in prison but set aside six months on condition he restitutes the complainant before March 31.
The State, represented by Ms Hilda Varaidzo Huni told the court that on March 9 in 2004, Pauline Musariri (42) met Manonga at Khatri Building at the corner of Fourth Street and Robert Mugabe Road.
She gave him 490 British pounds she wanted converted into Zimbabwe dollars. Manonga promised to return after an hour.
Musariri tried to call Manonga on his cellphone, which had been switched off.
She tried to locate him for a week but he was nowhere to be found.
She then reported the matter to the police who also failed to locate him.
Musariri later met Manonga and he tried to run away but was eventually apprehended by members of the public who then took him to the police. – CR.
