THE Premier League’s biggest ever sales, adjusted for inflation, have been revealed.
This summer has so far seen three Premier League players sold for £100million or more, those being Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali.
However, none of those deals even come close to the all-time biggest deals list once they are adjusted for inflation. The figures of those deals have been calculated by Valuball.
And it is Cristiano Ronaldo‘s first Manchester United exit to Real Madrid in 2009 which takes the top spot by some margin.
The deal to take the then reigning Ballon d’Or winner from Old Trafford to the Bernabeu cost £80million at the time. But the deal would now be worth a staggering £292m, making it almost three times the value of the deal that took Tonali to Tottenham from Newcastle.
A more modern deal is ranked in second place, with Eden Hazard‘s transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid in 2019 now being worth £245m.
It was a deal that saw £150m paid in total after performance related bonuses were met by trophy wins, despite Hazard failing to live up to the hype with a wave of injuries that defined his Real career.
Taking third is the first all English club transfer on the list with Alan Shearer‘s move from Blackburn to Newcastle.
In 1996 it was a £15m deal, but today it would cost a whopping £238m.
La Liga giants Real swoop in once again with the fourth largest deal ever thanks to their 1999 purchase of Nicolas Anelka from Arsenal costing £23.5m at the time. Now a deal for the Frenchman would cost a staggering £226m.
Another England to Spain flop proved to be Philippe Coutinho‘s switch from Liverpool to Barcelona. That 2017 move – which funded Jurgen Klopp‘s spine that would go on to win the Prem and Champions League for the Reds – was still a sizeable £142m at the time, but would now be worth £217m.
Paul Gascoigne‘s sale from Tottenham to Italian giants Lazio makes it to sixth on the list, with the £5.5m move in 1992 adjusted to be valued at £197m today.
Arsenal sold another big hitter in Marc Overmars to Real Madrid in 2000 for £25m, and that deal would now be an incredible £196m – meaning the Gunners would have pocketed more than £400m in sales from Real across two summers.
Gareth Bale was another player to move from North London to Spain, and proved to be the best of that selection.
The Welshman moved from Spurs to Real for £86m in 2013, and that deal would now be worth £192m. Rounding out the top 10 are deals that took Stan Collymore from Nottingham Forest to Liverpool and Rio Ferdinand from Leeds to Man Utd. – Sun.
