The former Dynamos midfielder joined Monoz three-and-a-half seasons ago as an assistant to Rodwell Dhlakama before he was elevated to become head coach before the end of the 2010 season.
Sources said Mangwiro was fired after some members of the executive felt that he had failed to control players who were demanding outstanding bonuses from three matches.
“The players are coming from a two-week break and the youngsters have spent most of their money and were now demanding bonuses that are still outstanding.
“Players do not understand that money does not grow on trees and the executive felt that Tau should have reigned them in instead of seemingly supporting the players.
“So the problem is more on money than the results.
“Generally, Mangwiro has done better than last season and still had a good chance for the championship because he had moulded a good team,” said the sources.
Both parties tried to be diplomatic in the fallout with Monoz chairman, Joseph Mukoki, conceding that they had parted ways.
“We have parted ways amicably with Mangwiro. Before the start of the season, we set targets and we again reviewed the targets with five games before the end of the first half.
“Generally, we felt that with the resources we have our team should be at the top, close to Highlanders or so.
“We then set another meeting this time and asked the coach if he was still equal to the task and he decided to resign,” said Mukoki.
Mukoki said the Monoz executive accepted the coach’s position and have appointed Biggie Zuze as the acting head coach.
“Maybe, Tau felt that were putting too much pressure on him and he chose to leave.
“We have parted amicably and, as per our contract, we will take care of our obligations, as far as the coach is concerned, for the next three months.
“In the meantime, Zuze, who was the assistant, will be the coach and will be helped by Nkululeko Dhlamini.
“George Jojo, who is responsible for the juniors, has also been called in to actively assist the team,” said Mukoki.
Mukoki believes that Mangwiro failed to transform Monomotapa into a consistent outfit.
“We think we had a good squad that should be winning consistently.
“Last year, we had some youngsters and this time we have brought some of our experienced players like Tawanda Nyamandwe and Kuda Musharu who were on loan.
“I think it was only once when we won two matches in succession and we feel that we should be getting better results.
“Last year we had such inconsistency and ended up fighting relegation on the last day of the season.
“So it’s a tight decision to make at times, but as people who are investing, we have our targets,” said Mukoki. Mangwiro, a former Masvingo United coach, said his relationship with Monomotapa ended unexpectedly.
“I was told after yesterday’s (Tuesday) training session that my services were no longer required.
“It’s an abrupt end.
“But I am grateful for the three-and-half years that I have been with team.
“I had my own good moments and, forever, I will be grateful to the club for helping me to attend a coaching course in Europe,” said Mangwiro.
Mangwiro, a former Under-20 national team coach, has previously been linked with a move to Dynamos. I do not have anything in mind at the moment because this has come so sudden.
“Looking back, I had some good moments to cherish, but the sad moment was when we lost 5-0 to Gunners and 5-1 to Hwange,” said Mangwiro.
