Moor named in Ireland squad to face Zim

Brandon Moyo

FORMER Zimbabwe international cricketer Peter Moor has been named in Ireland’s 14-member squad for their upcoming historic one-off Test match against the Chevrons, which is scheduled for next week at Stormont, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The one-off match is scheduled for July 25 to 29 and will be the first-ever red-ball match to be played between the two nations.

It will be played at the Civil Service Cricket Club.

The upcoming match will also be the first Test Match ever played in Northern Ireland and only the second Test Match in Ireland, with the inaugural game being in 2018 against Pakistan.

Moor is part of the 14 players who have been entrusted to get the job done against Zimbabwe by Ireland Cricket national selector Andrew White.

White said they will be looking for inspiration from their maiden Test victory, which came against Afghanistan in March.

“We have a pretty settled squad for this Test match just on the back of obviously winning the previous Test against Afghanistan.

“While there are lots of familiar names in there, I suppose the two names that stand out are the inclusion of Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey.

“On the back of our first victory (against Afghanistan), we are looking to back that up with another win.

“We are not looking to just pick a squad that will compete, we are looking at a squad that can win the Test match — by taking 20 wickets and scoring the runs that we need to score arguably in the first innings to set up the victory.

“Scott Irvine, our performance analyst, is one of the best in the business in terms of providing myself, the coaches, and players with the crucial information that we need to make decisions.

“The information he has given us to select the squad puts us in an informed position, and will hopefully give us the best chance of winning,” said White in a statement from Cricket Ireland.

Moor has 13 Test caps to his name, with eight of those coming in Chevrons colours.

His last Test for Zimbabwe was back in 2018 against Bangladesh in Mirpur where he also registered his highest score of 83 runs.

Five years later in 2023, he would go on to make his Ireland debut against his last opponent at the same venue where he had played his final game for the Chevrons.

He now has five Test caps for Ireland and the forthcoming historic Test is likely to be his sixth, should he make the starting 11.

Ireland will be captained by Andy Balbirnie with the veteran Paul Sterling also making the team.

The Chevrons arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday morning.

Ireland squad:

Andrew Balbirnie (captain), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gavin Hoey, Graham Hume, Matthew Humphreys, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, PJ Moor, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young
