Last year, 65 221 farmers registered to grow the golden leaf.
“So far, 19 744 growers have registered for the next season,” said TIMB, adding that the crop’s seed uptake presently stood at 388 491 grammes, expected to cover 64 748,5 hectares. During the same period in 2011, 355 993 grammes of seed were sold covering 59 332,2 ha.
Economic commentators have said the firming of tobacco prices at the auction floors this selling season had attracted more farmers into growing the crop in the next farming season.
So far, Zimbabwe has earned $95,1 million from the export of 23,2 million kilogrammes of flue-cured tobacco.
