Meanwhile, the rains currently being experienced in most parts of Zimbabwe have reportedly affected tobacco processing by farmers reaping their crop.
Zimbabwe Farmers Union president Mr Donald Khumalo said farmers could do nothing to reduce the damage by hailstorms and wind. “Growers who still have their crop in the field should re-ridge to protect the crop from the heavy rains,” he said.
Mr Khumalo said the rains could however benefit farmers who planted late. “We are happy for the late farmers because they are going to get enough from their late crop,” he said.
Farmer organisations also urged farmers to stop applying chemicals and fertilisers during the period.
