Most dams in Mashonaland West’s two catchment areas – Sanyati and Manyame – are now 100 percent full, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has said. In a recent statement, Zinwa spokesperson Ms Marjorie Munyonga said the average national dam level as at April 13, 2018 stood at 84,3 percent, with Sanyati Catchment at 100,4 percent.
The national water management body says although dams in Manyame Catchment area at 99,8 percent full, water levels are forecast to continue rising as the rainy season winds up.
“The national dam level average now stands at 84,3 percent,” she said.
“Mazowe Catchment has the highest dam level average at 100,8 percent, followed by Sanyati at 100,4 percent and Manyame Catchment, whose dam level average is 99,8 percent.
“Gwayi Catchment has a dam level average of 89,2 percent, Mzingwane (90,7 percent), Runde (73,4 percent) and Save is at 91,5 percent.”
Dams that are more than 100 percent full in Mashonaland West are Mazvikadei, Karoi and Biri standing at 101 percent, 103,8 percent and 103,5 percent respectively. Chibero is 100 percent full
Most dams are used for irrigation and mining activities in the province.
According to Zinwa, major dams in the Mazowe Catchment area in Mashonaland Central are also 100 percent full, with Mazowe, Nyambuya, Kushinga-Phikelela, Kotwa dams at 100,6 percent, 100 percent, 100,8 percent and 59,1 percent, correspondingly.
Mrs Munyonga noted that Zinwa clients needed to renew their water permits as the water year began on April 1.
