Mountain Lions shine at Danhiko Paralympics

MUTARE-based wheelchair basketball team Mountain Lions had a splendid performance during the Danhiko Paralympics Games played in Harare recently. Mountain Lions, who were the only new competitors among the five regular teams, settled for third position. The team attended the less privileged competition for the first time without any sponsor.

In an interview, club chairman Panganai Chiyo hailed the team’s performance as his side managed to defeat other well-established teams.
“I start by appreciating the hand put in by Isau Mupfumi by assisting us with transport to and from the tournament. Things were hard that we had no transport. However, the businessman helped us.

“Although we were considered the underdogs, we outclassed other teams and settled for position three. It was a great achievement for us.
“We were booted out by BCD basketball Club from Bulawayo, who were the eventual winners. Hosts Danhiko came second, the over-rated Southerton were fourth, while Bulawayo-based JVC finished last.

“Our biggest challenge is sponsorship. We are appealing to companies, individuals or well wishers to help us. We might earn a living through this sport.

“It was embarrassing during the just-ended games to have to seek uniforms from other teams. At some point, we played without uniforms.
“We still need equipment like wheelchairs, uniforms, balls and even a training court.

“We use Nzveve Deaf Centre basketball court in Sakubva and we are facing a lot of challenges,” said Chiyo.
