Mountaineers win

MOUNTAINEERS and the Mashonaland Eagles recorded victories in their two Logan Cup cricket matches this week.
Mountaineers romped to an innings and 40-runs victory over defending champions Matabeleland Tuskers at Queens while Eagles beat Southern Rocks by eight wickets at Masvingo Sports Club.
Tuskers were forced to follow-on after Englishman Mark Pettini scored 209 runs while captain Tinotenda Mawoyo (62) and Kudzai Sauramba (61) added impetus in Mountaineers’ big total of 435 runs.

Keith Dabengwa scored 101 runs in a vain battle to save the match, in the first innings, for the Tuskers who found themselves with a 156-run deficit after being bowled out for 279 runs.

Wellington Masakadza’s five-wicket haul and Tapiwa Mafudza’s four wickets destroyed the Tuskers.
The pair shared five more wickets in the second innings as Tuskers were bowled out for 116 runs.

Masakadza took eight wickets in the match while Mafudza took six.
Southern Rocks scored 196 runs in the first innings and another 361 runs in the second innings.

Mashonaland Eagles’ Tafadzwa Muzarawetu took eight wickets in the first innings and took another wicket in the second innings.
“We won this match because we managed to build partnerships and bat through both innings, this is something that the Rocks failed to do and we capitalised by adding more pressure with the ball,” said Muzarawetu.

“This was my second hundred in first-class cricket and it will remain a confidence booster for me in the next games to come, Rocks did not make it very easy for us, especially bowlers such as Trevor Garwe,” said Eagles batsman Simbarashe Gupo.
