This has left the regional committee heavily depleted after chairman Gift Banda was suspended by Zifa on allegations of match-fixing in the Central Region.
The region now has three members, Vice-chairman Morgan Dube who is the acting chairman, committee member in charge of development Isaac Musendo and fixtures secretary Patrick Malunga.
Treasurer, Tawanda Ruzive is busy concentrating on his Premier Soccer League team Quelaton’s troubles and has not been visible in the system.
Moyo, though, tried to play down his appointment.
“There has been an offer but nothing has been completed as yet and until I have something concrete on my hands, I cannot comment any further,” said.
He also denied that he has resigned from the Southern Region while acting chairman Dube also expressed surprise.
“I am not aware that Moyo has quit. As far as I am concerned, he is still our secretary-general,” said Dube from his base in Victoria Falls yesterday.
However, Zifa head of secretariat, Jonathan Mashingaidze confirmed the appointment of the former Sport and Recreation Commission Matabeleland North co-ordinator Moyo whom he said would start work at the beginning of next month.
“He will be joining us as education officer with effect from 1 September. He will be one of the key persons in Zifa whose duties will be to co-ordinate capacity building programmes under the ambit of Caf and Zifa,” said Mashingaidze.
The Zifa chief executive officer said Moyo would also oversee the data base of the association in terms of the four domains, coaching, football, medicine and refereeing.
“He will work with the Zifa technical director in terms of quality control of all programmes and will facilitate all the protocol to visiting Caf, Fifa and other football delegates in the country,” said Mashingaidze.
Asked whether the appointment of Moyo would not raise some eyebrows as being a councillor, he may be viewed as having had an unfair advantage over other potential candidates, Mashingaidze rubbished such fears.
He said Zifa wanted an experienced person with the necessary technical expertise and somebody who was football literate and had an education background.
It is however the Zifa Southern Region which has been left the biggest loser.
