A Mozambican national and his two Zimbabwean accomplices appeared in court recently facing charges of smuggling 500 metres of Chitenge clothing material into the country from the neighbouring country.
Inacio Benjamin Tinhazene of Manica, Mozambique was remanded to a later date for sentencing. His Zimbabwean counterparts Dick Kanyenze and McMillan Linado of Harare and Mutare respectively, were ordered to fork out $100 each in fines when they appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Perseverance Makala.
Failure to pay the fine, the two Zimbabweans will spend the next month in prison. The trio was caught with smuggled 500 metres of Chitenge clothing material at Forbes Border Post by police officers on patrol and they failed to produce relevant Zimra declaration documents.
The clothing material was worth $500 and it was seized in terms of the Customs and Excise Act. Meanwhile, two Harare men were also convicted of smuggling cellphones into the country from Mozambique.
Cephas Chidhindi (27) and Timothy Tsinyerere (28), all of Hillside, Harare were both convicted on their own plea of guilty by the same magistrate.
The pair smuggled 37 Nokia 103 phones from Mozambique.
