adminMatabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said Muchanja was intercepted following a scan of his South African registered truck at the border post.
He said detectives from the Border Control Unit spotted the truck and became suspicious of Muchanja’s movements.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said the truck was about to leave the border post for South Africa.
“We intercepted the truck and took it for examinations at the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) scanner sheds where 63,4kg of copper were found hidden in two tyres. The suspect was subsequently arrested and the copper forfeited.
“Further investigations revealed that Muchanja had declared to the customs authority that his truck was empty.
“We have since charged him for contravening a section of the Customs and Excise Act and he will soon appear in court,” said Ass Insp Ngwenya.
Recently three other truckers were picked up by police using the same modus operandi to smuggle copper cables into South Africa.
Last Friday, a Malawian trucker was nabbed by police at the same point attempting to smuggle export quality cigarettes worth R262 000.
Frank Austin Chisamba of Blantyre in Malawi who is employed by Load Masters Limited in that country was on Monday fined US$1 000 for the offence.
