Mozambique to blame

Speaking on the sidelines of the national malaria day commemorations held here on Wednesday, national malaria programme manager in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare Dr Joseph Mberikunashe said Mozambique had not been spraying against malaria parasites for the past two seasons because of lack of funds.

He said because of the absence of preventive measures in that country, cases of malaria rose, forcing Mozambicans to seek treatment in Zimbabwe whose health facilities are close to their homes.

“If we do the figures and subtract the number of people coming from Mozambique, we do not have an outbreak in both the affected provinces,” said Dr Mberikunashe.
“In fact, the figures have gone up than those expected during malaria peak season because half of the cases are not ours.”

According to the Government weekly disease surveillance report, Manicaland and Mashonaland Central provinces continue to record high numbers of malaria                                 fatalities.
