Mpepereki new Handball Federation president

THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation have elected a new executive with former vice-president Simbiso Mpepereki coming in as the new president after beating Amon Madzvamuse on Saturday.

The elections, which were initially set for March 31, were finally held at the Sports Commission offices at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

All posts were up for grabs and Mpepereki got eight votes against Madzvamuse’s one vote.

Mpepereki will be joined by Alphios Magiya as the vice-president.

Magiya amassed eight votes against Mandeya’s one vote.

Clemence Tauro was unopposed for the secretary-general post.

Stewart Sanhewe comes in as the treasurer while Lillian Chiketa and Reginald Tsimba come in as the two commissioner members.

Mpepereki said they will have their first meeting on Saturday to map the way forward as they take over from the previous executive led by Madzvamuse.

“We hope to put in place by the end of this week a critical path plan where we want to recover lost time from March.

“So, on Saturday the 6th, we are sitting for our first executive meeting where we want to look at the topical issues.

“These issues relate to normalising our relations with the SRC and we have to comply with their requirements. We also have to formalise our relations with ZOC.

“We also want to look at events that are supposed to be operational and the challenge of sponsorship. We want to establish whether our structures are functional.

“We had challenges ahead of these elections so there wasn’t co-ordination from national level to the lowest level,” said Mpepereki.

The elections were attended by nine provinces while Masvingo and the National Association of Primary School Head gave their apologies.

National Association of Secondary Schools Heads, Women in Sport and Madzvamuse did not attend.

Magiya said they need to focus on ensuring that the sport realises its full potential.

“The first thing is to have a calendar of events in place. I think from October last year to March handball has not been as active as expected because there were no guidelines or calendar of events.

“So the first thing we have to come up with is the calendar of events so that we resuscitate the excitement in handball.
