FORMER Zimbabwe Ambassador to South Africa, Cde Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday donated textbooks worth about $6,000 to Landa J Nkomo High School in Tsholotsho District.
Cde Mphoko said the school, a brainchild of the late Vice-President Landa John Nkomo, should not be neglected and urged everyone to support the initiative.

“This is the late Vice-President Nkomo’s school and was commissioned by President Mugabe. It should never be neglected. We should all support the noble dream of our leaders,” said Cde Mphoko.

The school was commissioned by the President in July 2012 at a colourful ceremony that attracted close to 20,000.

Handing over the donation of mostly Science and Mathematics textbooks, Cde Mphoko encouraged pupils at the school to study hard and pass.

“We brought Science and Mathematics books so that you study these subjects hard. The country needs people with knowledge and skills learnt from these subjects,” he said.

Cde Mphoko challenged pupils to be innovative and apply their knowledge to exploit and come out with new products from local resources available instead of thinking of going to work in South Africa.

“You must not be thinking of going to South Africa. You must be innovative and must come up with new products from locally available resources,” he said.

The deputy headmaster Cassious Ngwenya who received the donation on behalf of the school said he was grateful for the donation and promised that the school will take good care of the donated books.

“We’re grateful for the continued support for the school. We’ll take good care of the books and use them to improve the pupils’ performance,” said Ngwenya.

The donation comes after concerns were raised that the school was being neglected since the death of the national hero in January last year.
