MPOPOMA High School sports director James Rugwevera has hailed his athletes for amassing 33 medals for Mzilikazi District in the National Association of Secondary Schools Heads (Nash) track and field competitions held at White City Stadium. Mpopoma High athletes were the single most successful school in the tournament, scooping 13 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals for their district followed by Bulawayo Central District’s Hamilton High, who won 11 gold medals. Northlea High from Reigate District got nine gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals.
Rugwevera said appreciation of sports by Mpopoma pupils enabled them to come out tops.
“As a school, we want to balance all codes of education. We want to lead in academics and sports as well. The’re students who aren’t good in academics, but are good in sports and we nurture their talent,” said Rugwevera.
“We want to erase the belief that sports make pupils dull and prove that it actually enables them achieve certain things. Nowadays sport is a form of employment and pupils can live comfortable lives if they get the right training.”
Mzilikazi District retained their title by hauling 101 medals comprising 35 gold, 33 silver and 33 bronze. Bulawayo Central were second with 24 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze followed by Reigate (21 gold, 26 silver and 28 bronze).
