MPOPOMA High School football will represent Bulawayo in the 17 years and under National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) football tournament at Gebuza High School in Hwange on Saturday.
The tournament will see lads aged 17 years and below from schools across the country competing for the national pride and a grand prize. Pamushana of Masvingo are the defending champions in the tournament which is sponsored by Nash.
Other schools taking part are Shashani from Matabeleland South, Cheziya (Midlands), Regina Mundi (Matabeleland), Mavhuradonha ( from Mashonaland Central) Karoi Secondary (Mashonaland West), Mashoko (Masvingo) Chimhondoro from (Mashonaland East), Churchill (Harare), St Augustine from (Manicaland) and hosts Gebuza.
Mpopoma defeated Mzilikazi 1-0 in the provincial final played at Gifford on 30 June to secure the Bulawayo ticket national competition.
James Rugwevera, the Mpopoma sports director said their fine tuning for the trip to Hwange was well underway. The 17-year-olds held their training with the Under-15 team which played in the Copa Coca-Cola provincial finals at Gifford High School last Friday.
“The preparations are well underway, the team is training and preparing for the nationals to be played in Hwange. The 17 years and under team is also training together with the Under-15 team which is playing at provincial level which is positive for both sides,’’ said Rugwevera.
He is confident that his boys will do well at the national competition as they have previously brought silverware.
Mpopoma went to the same tournament last year in Chipinge where they were beaten 1-0 by Pamushana in the final.
