Mpopoma wins big at field competitions

MPOPOMA High School emerged as overall winners of the Mzilikazi district track and field competitions that ended yesterday at White City Stadium.

Mpopoma collected 71 medals in total, 40 gold, 22 silver and nine bronze, in the two-day event.

Mandwandwe High were second with 12 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals, while in third place was Sikhulile High with 12 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze.

The competition featured 10 schools and a squad will be chosen for the provincial track and field event to be held at White City Stadium from March 3-4.

The competitions’ convener Dumezweni Sibanda said: “This year’s event was very competitive and shows that schools are serious about sports. Our athletes performed very well and we’re hoping to retain our title against the rest of Bulawayo in the provincials.”
