PETRA High School’s director of cricket Themba Phiri has lauded the country’s commitment to developing the game, saying investing resources in the grassroots was vital to restoring the status the country enjoyed about two decades ago.
Phiri was speaking after the eighth edition of the annual Petra High School T20 tournament held at the weekend.
“We are happy with how the tournament fared and we are really impressed with the levels that schools’ cricket has reached over the years. When we started this tournament in 2009, not much was there, but it has since grown over the years and we would like to thank our partners for showing us their commitment to improving standards, especially at the grassroots level, because that is what we need to restore our cricket powerhouse status,” said Phiri
Phiri urged more sponsors to come on board so that they can hold more tournaments during the cricket season.
“I appeal to sponsors to pitch in and help us in growing the sport because we want to maintain balance by having more such tournaments.”
Eight schools featured in this year’s tournament and Prince Edward High of Harare emerged winners after edging surprise finalists Kyle College of Masvingo by 12 runs.
