Masuku and club co-owners Farai Jere and Twine Phiri confirmed the deal which will be reviewed at the end of the year.
Caps United fired Sean Connor and Lloyd Chitembwe after the team’s 3-2 loss to Hwange at the Colliery on Sunday.
Makepekepe, one of the country’s leading clubs, has not had the best of starts to the season and find themselves in ninth place with 19 points, 17 adrift of leaders Highlanders.
Jere said he and Phiri had admired Masuku for a while and were impressed with his resume.
“One thing that we have admired him for was the beautiful football Highlanders played under him when he took over. Another aspect about him is that he has been attending courses,” said Jere.
Jere also confirmed that Mangwiro and Masuku had resolved to have Brenna Msiska staying on as club goalkeepers’ trainer.
“Brenna stays on as goalkeepers’ trainer, the announcement was done after consultations with them and they are happy working with him,” said Jere.
Phiri said he was hopeful that this is a combination that would work.
“We have agreed to have Mkhuphali work with Mangwiro, they are a good combination that we are confident will deliver. We will give them all our support and pray for better results. Soon we should be getting good results,” said Phiri.
Phiri said Caps United was a soccer brand that should always be among the front-runners in any competition and not fighting relegation or making the numbers in the Premiership.
Masuku, in an interview hours after arriving in Harare yesterday, said he was looking forward to the challenge. He acknowledged the pressure that goes with the Caps United coaching jobs.
“It’s a new challenge for me. Caps United are a big side with big ambitions and obviously there will always be pressure and I hope to handle it,” said Masuku.
His immediate job will be to help his new paymasters beat log leaders Highlanders at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
Masuku, who rose from school football as a star at JZ Moyo Secondary School near West Nicholson in Matabeleland South, established himself in Gwanda before Delma Lupepe’s AmaZulu snapped him up.
He also played for the Highlanders juniors.
After impressing at AmaZulu, Masuku was capped at Under-20, Under-23 and senior national team level, making him one of the most decorated players at Usuthu.
He won the league, Independence Cup and the Madison Trophy with AmaZulu and another major move followed to Highlanders with whom he won the unbranded league in 2006.
In 2010 Mohamed Fathi chose Masuku as his assistant and when he was fired the former Warriors right back was given the Bosso job on his way to an emphatic finish with Mernard Mupera and Joel Ngodzo among his stars.
With Zephania Ngodzo, Joel, Mupera, Brighton Dube, Francis Kanda and Simba Gate leaving for greener pastures, Masuku never had it his way as the club failed to find replacements of the same calibre as the sextet.
Masuku’s contract was not renewed at the end of last year.
Masuku has also worked at Methembe Ndlovu’s Grassroots Project coaching schoolchildren at primary school level.
He declined to comment on the forthcoming challenge against Highlanders.
“I have not even found my compass at the club, I cannot talk about that as yet,” said Masuku.
