Ms Dee ready to bring laughter

THE vibrant atmosphere of Theatre in The Park in Harare will soon be electrified by the much-anticipated return of Bulawayo comedian, Nomsa Chibi Muleya, popularly known as Ms Dee.

On Sunday, she will grace the stage in a performance dubbed Classic Zimbo, fronted by the charismatic Tanya Alex.

This all-female gig promises to celebrate feminine talent in comedy, featuring DJ Fafi and Mya Banksie in the line-up.

Ms Dee’s journey in comedy began a decade ago, catalysed by the late Clive Chigubhu and Umahlekisa Entertainment director, Ntando Van Moyo during her film work with Priscillah Sithole at iBhayiskopo.

She told Chronicle Showbiz that her debut performance at the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund at the City Hall in Bulawayo some years back was nothing short of magical; the enthusiastic reception from the crowd ignited her passion for stand-up comedy.

“The crowd was amazing, and it gave me the spirit to continue,” she recalled, reflecting on the pivotal moment that set her on the path to comedic stardom.

Over the years, Ms Dee has become a familiar face in the Zimbabwe comedy scene. She has performed at prestigious events such as the Harare International Festival of Arts, the Beitbridge Festival and the Ibumba Arts Festival, showcasing her talent under the banner of Umahlekisa Entertainment.

However, the past few years have not been without their challenges. Ms Dee took a step back from the limelight to focus on her personal life, a decision she described as essential for her well-being.

“Sometimes you just need to switch off and recharge,” she explained.

This hiatus, though necessary, was marked by loneliness as she grappled with her absence on the stage — a place where she felt she truly belonged.

The turning point came this year when she faced a life-threatening breast infection that kept her bedridden for months.

“I was sick for months and upon my recovery, I thought, ‘dude, I made it, let’s make jokes!’” This brush with mortality instilled in her a renewed sense of urgency and purpose.

“Being away has taught me not to take life lightly and to stop procrastinating because tomorrow is not guaranteed. Work while you still can.”

As Ms Dee prepares for her comeback, she carries a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective on life.

The Classic Zimbo show is not just a chance for her to reclaim her spot on stage; it is a celebration of resilience and the power of laughter. This performance marks more than just a return to the stage; it symbolises a new chapter in her life.
