MSU bolster squad

MIDLANDS State University has beefed up its squad ahead of the second half of the season after acquiring three experienced players from premiership clubs.

The Zifa Central Region Division One league side has acquired attacking midfielder Philip Makanje from ZPC Kariba while Tendai “Kid” Mukambi and defender Peter Muzondo have joined from Border Strikers.

MSU coach John Phiri is confident that the new recruits will prove able reinforcements to strengthen his team to fight for the title which seems to be out of their hands.

“We want to fight for the title. We are not giving up yet and that’s why we are adding some new players and so far we have added Tendai Mukambi, Peter Muzondo and Philip Makanje,” said Phiri.

“These players have requisite experience having played in the premiership for long. We are also bringing in some youngsters from the lower divisions as we want to fuse experience with youth. I am confident that we are going to turn the corner in the second half of the season.”

MSU were touted as the team to beat at the start of the season after acquiring a number of experienced players who starred for Shabanie Mine and FC Platinum in the premiership.

Smart Muchabaiwa, Farai Mususunye, Edmore Tsoro, Hamilton Masumbuko and Talbert Mutombeni are some of the former premiership stars who joined the Students but their experience has proved not good enough as they are 13 points behind log leaders Blanket Mine after 15 matches into the 2016 season campaign.

Interestingly every team that topped the league at halfway mark has gone on to win the title since the formation of the league in 2010. FC Platinum, Hardbody, Tripple B, Chapungu, Whawha and lately Border Strikers have all topped at the halfway mark and went on to win promotion into the Castle Lager premiership.
