A Midlands State University secretary has dragged her ex-lover and Gweru businessman, Edwin Muzvuru, to court, demanding $1,000 maintenance for their son.
Muzvuru owns a transport company based in Gweru. He and Faith Chiwawa, 34, have a four-year old son.
They appeared before Gweru magistrate Tendai Madanhire at the civil courts on Thursday.
Chiwawa wants $1,000 in child support, arguing that the money was a fair deal to her considering that he leads a flashy life and his two other children are students at tertiary institutions that charge high fees.
“Your worship, Muzvuru can afford to give me the amount I am asking as child support. He leads a flashy life and owns three buses and a UD truck. The truck is meant for hire. He also collects rentals from his houses,” said Chiwawa.
However, Chiwawa failed to prove her assertions that Muzvuru was leading a flashy life when asked by the court. Muzvuru said he no longer runs any business.
“I now lead the life of an average citizen,” Muzvuru told the court.
It also emerged that Muzvuru was paying $140 in child support to another woman, Hazel Magaya, following an order issued by the same court.
In Thursday’s case, Madanhire advised Muzvuru and Chiwawa to come up with an out of court settlement that would be acceptable to both parties.
Chiwawa then reviewed her demands downwards to $800. Madanhire felt the amount was still too high.
He said if he is to grant her $800 for the maintenance of her child, the other children would be entitled to the same amount.
“This will leave the father with nothing since you claim that he earns $4,000 a month,” said magistrate Madanhire.
Muzvuru offered his ex-lover $150 for the maintenance of their son. Madanhire will pass judgment in the matter on Monday.
