Two Midlands State University students drowned in dams in separate incidents during students’ outreach programmes over the weekend. Talent Marunga (19), a first year student reading for a Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Economics drowned at Whitewaters Dam about 20 kilometres outside Gweru, while Simbarashe Masvivi (20) another first year student reading Law drowned at Insukamini Dam in Lower Gweru also 20km outside the city.
Sources said Marunga had gone for a developmental programme organised by the institution aimed at imparting life skills to students when he drowned.
When the students arrived at Whitewaters Dam and started setting up a camp, Marunga and some other students dived into the dam for a swim.
Marunga drowned and his body was later retrieved by a lifeguard.
Masvivi drowned in Insukamini Dam after he had gone for a church outreach with other students.
On their way back to the university, the students decided to stop at the dam to take pictures when Masvivi went with three others to the dam wall.
While at the dam wall, Masvivi decided to slip into the deep waters and drowned in the process.
His body was retrieved yesterday afternoon by the police sub-aqua unit from Bulawayo and taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
MSU information director Mrs Mirirai Mawere confirmed the two incidents, saying the university was deeply saddened by the untimely death of the students.
