IN a powerful show of empathy and youth-led social responsibility, the Tourism Club at Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) recently brought warmth and cheer to Zororai Old People’s Home.

The outreach programme organised under the students’ voluntarism initiative went beyond charity, delivering, not only essential supplies, but also companionship to the elderly residents.

The students were joined by industry partners and university staff in a collaborative act of community care that underscored the value of solidarity across sectors.

The group arrived bearing groceries, toiletries, and other basic necessities.

Yet it was the heartfelt interactions, shared meals, and personal conversations that left the greatest impression.

The elderly residents responded with visible joy, their day brightened by the presence of the students.

Zororai Old People’s Home administrator, Ms Tariro Chitate, described the visit as uplifting.

“The visitors brought more than material support, and they reminded our residents that they are still seen, heard, and appreciated. It was a day filled with dignity and connection,” she said.

The initiative drew support from a range of partners, including MSUAS staff, Elephant Executive Lodges, Tamaris Treats, Heritage Haven, and Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Manicaland Chapter.

Their contributions reflected a shared commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable communities.

Chairperson of the MSUAS Tourism Department, Dr Vitalis Basera said the experience was equally enriching for the students.

“Community engagement is an essential component of tourism education. For our students, this was, not only emotionally rewarding, but also an important learning experience that strengthens their ability to relate with diverse populations,” he said.

Among the delegation was MSUAS alumna and Heritage Haven marketing executive, Miss Shingirai Zisengwe, who applauded the initiative as a model of effective academic–industry collaboration.

“This visit demonstrated the transformative impact of collective action. When institutions of learning and business communities come together with a shared purpose, the results are deeply meaningful,” said Miss Zisengwe.

The event highlighted the Tourism Club’s commitment to promoting social consciousness alongside academic excellence.

It also reinforced the role of experiential learning in nurturing compassionate, socially responsible graduates poised to lead in the tourism and hospitality sector.
