MT DARWIN is at a standstill as it braces to host the 43rd Independence celebrations today.
This Mashonaland Central Province town has never seen anything like this.
“I hope this historic event in our province will be in our final examinations,” said a secondary school student, shortly after arriving at Mt Darwin High School, where the main celebrations will be held.
Based on oral evidence narrated to him by his grandfather, Solomon Madiro told H-Metro that he wanted to collect every detail of the country’s history.
Solomon travelled from Jonasi village, under chief Musana, to attend the celebrations.
“To me, this 43rd Independence celebration is a mirror of what I was informed by my late grandfather,” said Solomon.
“He used to tell me how costly freedom came.
“He narrated how they used to have running battles with the Rhodesian forces and lost their wealth, in the form of cattle and goats, during the liberation struggle.
“He told us about the importance of preserving peace emphasising that it costs lots of lives to regain lost peace.
“This is our first time to attend Independence Day celebrations in the presence of the President.
“I am looking forward to meeting President Mnangagwa and some of our best local football players when Dynamos play Highlanders.
“I also plan to enjoy music from some of our top musicians.”
A number of students travelled from different parts of the province like Dotito, Dande, Hoya, Masembura, Manhenga, Mupandira, Chindotwe, Shamva and Bindura to attend today’s historic celebrations.
