THE United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ)-run school, Mt Selinda High School saga has taken a new twist this week with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education ordering the reinstatement of sacked headmaster, Reverend Watson Bundwa.
Rev Bundwa was sacked as Mt Selinda headmaster late last year by the UCCZ’s highest decision body, the Synod after being accused of a plethora of allegations which range from abusing school funds and insubordination. In a letter written by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Sylvia Utete Masango, that The Manica Post has in possession, the parent ministry advised Mr Bundwa to resume his duties as Mt Selinda headmaster with immediate effect.
Part of the letter reads: “Further to the meeting held between the ministry and the responsible authority, please be advised to resume duties as the substantive head of the school. An investigation team will be appointed to look into the allegations being raised against you,” reads part of the letter written on February 23, 2015.
The decision by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education comes in a wake of the Annual General Meeting held this month when chaos reigned supreme as parents clashed with the SDC and the church for unfairly dismissing the headmaster. Parents demanded the reinstatement of Rev Bundwa as the school headmaster, arguing that he had transformed the school. At this meeting, all stakeholders failed to reach a consensus and another meeting is on the cards to chart the way forward.
Mt Selinda High School (former American Board Mission) is ranked among the top 100 schools in the country.
In 2013, the school received the Secretary’s Bell award, the highest award of merit given to the best school overall in the province under the leadership of Rev Bundwa.
The school posted excellent results in the 2014 A-Level results, scoring a staggering 97, 65 percent pass-rate.
