Mubure takes first pro title

in the Netherlands at the weekend.
Mubure, who became the first black Zimbabwean squash player to turn professional when he joined the Professional Squash Association last month, won the Dunlop circuit on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Zimbabwean had a first round bye before he met Ivo Schuman in the quarter-finals and he got the better of him, winning the match 3-0 with ease (11-9, 11-4, 11-2).
In the semi-finals, Mubure came up against Rene Geraedts whom he beat by the same scoreline, 3-0 (12-10, 11-7, 11-5) to book a date in the final against Justin Vanderleest of Canada.
And the Zimbabwean was stretched to the limit by his Canadian opponent in the final before he beat him 3-1 (10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9) to lift his first silverware in his debut season as a professional player.
Speaking to The Herald from his base in Eindhoven in the Netherlands yesterday, Mubure said he was just over the moon after his latest achievement in Europe.
“Well, I just can’t believe it that I’ve won my first tournament in just inside a month after I’ve turned professional.
“I didn’t expect this to happen so quick. So, this is a remarkable achievement for myself and I dedicate this victory to all my teammates back home at Premier Belgravia Sports Club in Harare, my sponsors there in Zimbabwe and, of course, my family members who have been very supportive of me in my career as a squash player,” Mubure said.
Mubure left Zimbabwe towards the end of last month for a three-month stay in the Netherlands after he was invited to stay and play squash in that country by their national coach Sjef van der Eijden.
This came after Mubure joined the Professional Squash Association, making him eligible to play in the professional circuit in Europe. Apart from playing in the Netherlands, Mubure is also expecting to play in a number of other major international tournaments in Germany and Belgium during his three-month stay in Europe.
This will enable him to get the PSA Tour points and a world ranking.
