THE Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda and Senate president Cde Mabel Chinomona are in Geneva, Switzerland, for the 6th edition of the Inter-Parliamentary union World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
The Conference, which began yesterday and ends tomorrow, seeks to promote multilateralism under the aegis of parliamentary diplomacy.
Advocate Mudenda arrived yesterday and was received at the Geneva International Airport by Her Excellency Ever Mlilo, the Zimbabwean Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva.
Cde Chinomona arrived in Geneva on Sunday to participate in the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, that was held at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) headquarters.
The Conference is being held under the theme: “A world in turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All”.
“As the world grapples with a plethora of challenges, including ravaging wars, climate change and trade tariff wars, the Conference aims to provide a unique forum for high-level engagement and dialogue among Parliamentary Speakers from around the world to find lasting solutions to the global debilitating socio-economic conundrums,” reads part of a statement from Parliament.
The Conference consists of a plenary debate, panel discussions, roundtables and the presentation of substantive country reports and will conclude with the adoption of a Declaration.
Advocate Mudenda is expected to speak during the general debate on the theme and will also contribute during a panel discussion focusing on the role of parliamentarians in shaping the digital future.
