Mujuru to relinquish Mr Novice crown

GARIKAYI Mujuru’s reign as Mr Novice will come to an end on April 26 when the interim National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness hold this year’s edition in the capital.Mujuru, who pumps iron at Pro-Fitness Gym, is now ineligible to enter the Mr Novice since he has established himself as an athlete and will be handing over the crown to yet another unknown hulk.

The Mr and Ms Novice competition will be the first event of the year to be organised by the NFZBBF this year and is only open to bodybuilders who have never taken part in any competition before.

Mujuru won the contest at Country Club last year and has since joined the big boys club and could be competing in more prestigious contests like Mr Harare and Mr Iron Man.

NFZBBF liaison executive Quiet Shangai said staging competitions like the Mr Novice was one of the resolutions the interim came up with at their stakeholders meeting at the weekend.

“Following the resignation of Otis Goredema, we held a meeting with all concerned people and it was agreed that Kenny Murungweni or Godfrey Nyoni, who are the vice-presidents, should take over.

“It could be anyone else from the current committee. A substantive president for the association will be elected at the end of the year after we are done with the constitution, whose draft has been circulated to stakeholders.

“Another task given to the national federation is to hold competitions and we are starting with the Mr Novice set for April 26 at Body Tech Gym in Harare,” said Shangai. Shangai said the interim leadership was also trying to reach out to small and backyard gyms around the country so that membership to the federation grows.

“Sub committees were created with Gerald Chitsa coming in as the head of the finance and resource mobilisation committee while Patrick Zaremba was elected head of the organising committee while Danny Desouza was given the post as the head of judges’ panel.

“Veteran trainer George Master bounced back into mainstream bodybuilding as head of disciplinary while Sibangani Guzha and I were tasked with fitness development and communications respectively,” said Shangai.

The bodybuilding federation is currently de-registered by the Sports Commission as they have failed to submit financial reports over the past year.

Shangai is confident that they will put their house in order soon.

After the Mr and Ms Novice, the next major bodybuilding competition on the calendar is the Mr and Ms Iron Man in June.
