AFTER nearly two years away from competitive action, Highlanders’ defensive midfielder Darlington Mukuli, made his return to the field after coming on as a substitute in Bosso’s 4-0 demolition of Kwekwe United at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
The midfielder’s journey with the first team since his promotion from the club’s developmental side has been marred by injuries.
Mukuli’s troubles began in 2023 when an ankle injury kept him out for most of the first half of the season. Just as it seemed he was on the mend, fate dealt him another harsh blow.
A knee injury at the start of 2024 left him sidelined for the majority of the year. The setback was severe enough that he was not registered for the first half of last season.
“I have faced darkness, self-doubt and fear.
“But I have also discovered strength, resilience and the unbreakable will to rise again,” said Mukuli.
The journey back from such injuries is rarely linear, and Mukuli’s experience was no different. An early knock during pre-season training delayed his return once again, leaving him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates prepared for another campaign. For many, such repeated setbacks would have been too much to overcome.
For Mukuli, they only served to fuel the fire that had never been extinguished.
“My ACL injury took away the game I love, but it did not take away my passion. The fire that once burnt bright still flickers within me,” said Mukuli.
The midfielder knows he has much to prove, not only to his critics but to himself.
“To my loved ones, teammates and coaches who have supported me through this journey, thank you. Your love, encouragement and patience mean everything,” said Mukuli.
For all the trials Mukuli has faced, the support of those around him has been pivotal. This includes his coaches and teammates.— @innocentskizoe
