MULTICHOICE Zimbabwe is celebrating women in the world of arts and entertainment sector, which provides a solid foundation for the empowerment of women as business leaders.
Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said the celebration of Women’s Month, throughout March, provides an opportunity to highlight the role being played in women’s empowerment by the arts and entertainment sector.
“Women have long been instrumental in making this sector a key player in the world economy and more and more of them are taking up positions of leadership, thus shaping the future of the sector and contributing to growth and development of economies and communities.
“Arts and entertainment is not just about gloss and glitz.
“It’s a sector where women can guide, direct and foster growth, letting us all see how it’s not about helping people pass time, but a means of viewing our world and shaping our world.
“Gender barriers and gaps can easily be demolished in this sector, and indeed they have been.”
She said that programming on the DStv platform has been successful in projecting women, not only in front of the camera, but also behind it.
“On camera, there has been significant progress in showing strong women on equal terms with men.
“Film is a mirror of society and the changes of recent years and decades are seen on screen, making platforms such as DStv, catalysts for changing opinions and stimulating ideas and innovation,” she said.
Dziva said Africa had seen huge growth in commercial film-making, with Nollywood generating over US$6.4 billion in revenue and more than 2 500 films a year.
“People are recognising the importance of gender equality and of women being given opportunities that would have been completely inaccessible in the past.
“The DStv platform encourages women not to be deterred by the challenges they meet in the industry, but to move forward, have faith in themselves, their scripts and their work and embrace the power of networking.”
