Perennial sewer problems continue to be one of Chitungwiza Municipality’s most pressing challenges although the local authority is recording some improvement in some areas.

Chitungwiza Mayor Councillor Rosaria Mangoma told the 498th Ordinary Council meeting held on Friday that one of the areas that had seen some improvement was Rufaro, a hotspot that has historically suffered from sewer bursts.

“I am pleased to note that during my visit, there was no active burst, but the area remains vulnerable and requires close monitoring,” she said.

“At Tangenhamo Primary School, however, raw sewage was visibly flowing, a situation that is both unacceptable and a threat to the health and dignity of our residents.”

Cllr Mangoma commended the Department of Works for responding swiftly to her concerns.

“They assured me that remedial work at Rufaro will commence soon and I urge that this promise is matched with swift and visible action on the ground,” she said.

Cllr Mangoma said sewer rehabilitation projects must be completed on time.

“Where possible, they must be expedited. Our people deserve better,” she said.

Cllr Mangoma acknowledged the challenges faced by the departments, of outdated and inadequate equipment.

“This underlines the urgent need to strengthen revenue-generating strategies so that we can reinvest in the infrastructure and machinery required to respond effectively,” she said. Cllr Mangoma called on the municipality to intensify efforts to bring vendors onto their system, formalise their operations and ensure they contribute to revenue lawfully and transparently.

“Let us confront the reality that many informal traders are operating daily without contributing anything to council, yet they are paying space barons,” she said.

“Equally important is the need to tighten credit control. Council cannot continue to offer services while our debts accumulate.

“We must follow up on all council debtors. Every dollar recovered is a step closer to improved service delivery.”

Cllr Mangoma commended the team that oversaw the completion of road works at Chinembiri intersection.

“This is a welcome development that demonstrates what is possible when we prioritise service delivery,” she said.
