The headlines were grabbed by the giant Senegalese who volleyed, from inside his own half, with a goal that will be discussed for months.
Sundowns’ coach, Pitso Mosimane, said it was a contender for the Goal of the Season.
“It was a clever goal. He struck it with vision. You could see how their coach celebrated, it was a great goal,” Mosimane said.
The 88th minute goal gave SuperSuport United a 1-0 victory over their city rivals.
But the script could have been very different if Mushekwi had brought his shooting boots.
The big Zimbabwean forward missed a great chance and then blazed high and wide, from the penalty spot, when presented with a golden opportunity.
Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams denied Edward Manqele from a corner in the 13th minute of the game.
The striker shook of his defender and powered a header towards goal but his effort was brilliantly saved by Williams.
The SuperSport shot-stopper came to Matsatsantsa’s rescue again three minutes later after a quick break from Sundowns.
Anthony Laffor was the player denied by SuperSport’s keeper this time around.
In 33rd minute Sundowns again threatened the SuperSport goal but yet again Williams was up to the task.
After great play by Laffor, Mushekwi found himself in space but was denied by a rushing Williams.
Williams was again in the mix in the 41st minute of the game but this time he brought down Anthony Laffor in the box and left the referee with no choice but to award the Brazilians a penalty.
Mushekwi stood up to take the penalty but the striker blazed his effort over the crossbar.
The Brazilians finally managed to beat Williams in the 43rd minute through Manqele but the striker was denied off the line by Innocent Mdledle.
Sundowns were made to rue their missed chances and remain in the bottom half ot the table.
“In the first half we should been three goals down. They were all over the show, I should have made changes after 20 minutes but I didn’t, we got through to half-time by the skin our teeth,” said SuperSport United coach, Gavin Hunt.
“I made changes in the second half and we looked better.
“We tried to play a different way, which we did and I thought it was good. But certainly if you look at the overall game, we were very fortunate.
“But let’s go back to the whole season, sometimes you get your rewards.
The hard work you put in throughout the season and you don’t get rewarded, like Tuesday night, we should have won, today we should not have won.” — Sports Reporter/KickOff.
