ZIFA Northern Region secretary-general Sweeney Mushonga underwent surgery at the Avenues Clinic on Tuesday after he was hit by a car in Harare on Saturday. Mushonga suffered leg injuries while on his way from a meeting for all the country’s regions in Masvingo on the same day where they discussed a possible national sponsorship deal.

ZIFA Northern Region chairman Willard Manyengavana, who was in the company of Mushonga when the accident occured, told The Herald yesterday they were hopeful he will make a full recovery.

Mushonga, working with Manyengavana and vice chairman Martin Kweza, have changed the face of the ZIFA Northern Region Division One league in the past year.

They managed to lure a number of companies to brand their league and provided a spark in the darkness that usually stalks domestic football administration.

Mushonga, a workhorse with a passion to see a huge improvement in the affairs of Division One clubs, might be out of the limelight for some time.

“It’s very sad that one of us ended up being hit by a car and suffered the injuries that have resulted in him being hospitalised,” Manyengavana said.

“Sweeney is a big part of our administration and it’s unfortunate that this happened at a time when we have been running around, as a team, to try and make sure that we lay the foundation to ensure that we have a successful 2015 football season. The good thing, though, is that he is likely to make a full recovery and we will have him back, working for the clubs soon.”

The ZIFA Northern Region Division One league championship will get underway next weekend following the adjustments that had to be made after the expulsion of teams which failed to pay their affiliation fees and the invitation of other teams to take their place.
