Musicians fight child abuse

Top musicians Mai Olivia Charamba, Alexio Kawara and Cynthia Mare last week challenged the nation to stand up against child abuse and gender-based violence. The three musicians are the ambassadors of World Education Inc/Batwana an organisation that has worked towards eliminating gender-based violence and child abuse.

Last week the musicians met the child advisory board who were highlighting some cases of child abuse.

Video footages of child abuse in Kariba and other parts of the country were also played at the workshop. In one of the footages a child is ordered to take some heavy duties after school.

He was severely beaten in the event that he fails to take some of those duties.

Mai Charamba said there was need to reach out there educating people about the child abuse.

“From the videos you can see that people don’t know that child abuse is condemned,” she said.

She castigated religious and cultural practices that encourage child abuse.

“There are some practices that need to be abolished as they encourages child abuse. The moment we get rid of it we are reducing abuse against our own blood,” she said.

For Mare the nation has to rise up against child abuse.

“It is the duty of everyone to stand against child abuse. If we work to abolish this evil then we can go forward as a nation,” she said.
She said they would do their best to stand against child abuse and gender-based violence.

“The task is not only for me or Mai Charamba or Alexio but for the nation to stand against child abuse and gender-based violence,” she said.

Kawara said they were working hard with other ambassadors to fight against child abuse and gender-based violence. The organisation’s child protection advisor Precious Muwoni said through their officers across the country they are working to eliminate child abuse and gender-based violence.

“As you have seen from the footage that our officers are working to educate the nation on cases of child abuse. They are on the ground and have already dealt with such cases,” she said.
