According to a statement issued after the meeting, the attendees agreed that the party or bloc winning the majority of votes in the parliamentary elections, namely the FJP-led Democratic Alliance, would nominate one of its members as the parliamentary speaker.
The two deputy speakers would be selected from parties ranking the second and third, while the chairmen of the committees in the parliament would be selected under agreements among the various parties represented in the People’s Assembly, the official news agency MENA reported.
Preliminary election results show the Democratic Alliance winning 233 seats, followed by the Islamic Alliance with 121, the liberal Al-Wafd Party with 45 and the Egyptian Bloc with 39, local newspaper Egyptian Gazette reported. – Xinhua.
