Two thousand families from Mhondoro-Mubaira constituency yesterday received food hampers from local Muslim humanitarian organisation Dar al Salam in conjunction with its German partners — Muslimehelfenas — as part of their national Covid-19 response.

The food was distributed to people regardless of their religious background.

Each family received a hamper containing four litres of cooking oil, 5kg of flour, 5kg soya chunks, two bars of washing soap, four kg of sugar, two kilogrammes salt and 20 kg of mealie meal.

Dar al Salam chairman Mr Agripa Kapuya, who handed out the hampers, said their humanitarian gesture was carried out following the increase in the number of people who needed assistance.

“We do not live in isolation. Everyone everywhere regardless of their political or religious background remains part of our lives, hence when the need to support those who are food insecure arose, we chipped in,” he said.

Local MP Cde Freddy Kapuya said the donation was a shot in the arm for people in his constituency.

“Considering the drought we experienced last season, this donation will play a part in supplementing the little you have,” he said.

The gesture would go a long way in complementing Government efforts to assist rural communities.

Recipients of the hampers expressed gratitude to the two organisations.

“This is a welcome gesture for us, obtaining these basic necessities has been difficult during these Covid-19 times,” said Mr Lawrence Maguta. The two organisations are also running a national orphans scheme that is benefiting over 300 000 orphans countrywide.

Last month, they also availed a fund to assist women entrepreneurs whose business were affected by the pandemic.
