Innocent Kurira in Maphisa
KNOWLEDGE Musona struck late to hand Scottland the 2026 Independence Cup title after capitalising on a defensive mix-up to seal a hard-fought final played in difficult conditions at Maphisa Growth Point.
The former Warriors skipper produced the decisive moment in a match that had long been shaped by a heavy downpour earlier in the day, which left the pitch muddy, slippery and difficult for both sides to play their usual free-flowing football.
Despite the conditions, the occasion itself was anything but subdued in the stands, where a carnival atmosphere carried through the afternoon as supporters from both sides turned the venue into a sea of noise, colour and song.
On the pitch, however, control was hard to find.
Players from both teams struggled for balance, with passes often failing to reach their targets and footing proving unreliable throughout the contest. It became a game of moments rather than rhythm.
Scottland threatened first, with Musona testing his range early on, firing narrowly wide from distance as he looked to impose himself on proceedings.
Highlanders responded through Reason Sibanda, who came closest in the first half after being expertly released by a clever Mongameli Tshuma pass, only to fire over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
As the match wore on, chances remained limited but Highlanders began to find openings. Isaac Ngoma forced a fine save from Scottland goalkeeper Prince Tafiremutsa early in the second half, sparking brief momentum for Bosso.
But just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Scottland delivered the decisive blow.
A late defensive lapse proved costly, and Musona reacted quickest inside the box, punishing the error with a composed finish to seal the title for Scottland.
It was a moment of quality in a game defined by grit, conditions and fine margins.
At the final whistle, Scottland celebrated a landmark victory.
