A LOT is expected from Zimbabwean boxers who will take part in the inaugural “Trabablas Gloves On” tournament in Chivhu tomorrow but there is something special about one pugilist.
Tinashe “Chairman” Mwadziwana will not only be seeking his 20th professional win, but the Mbare-bred boxer will also be out to reclaim the World Boxing Federation belt.
What makes his case special is that he is coming back into the ring after a 15-month sabbatical.
Mwadziwana had actually quit the sport to focus on other business ventures.
The 35-year-old boxer will square up against Laston Kaira of Malawi for the World Boxing Federation Africa Super Featherweight title.
The fight is one of the highlights of a 20-bout boxing fiesta at Phil Jen Country Lodges in Chivhu.
The “Trabablas Gloves On” boxing tournament has attracted over 40 boxers from different countries including DR Congo, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.
Mwadziwana goes into his match with 19 wins from 33 fights and has been backed by his manager Clyde Musonda of Delta Force boxing stable to triumph over Kaira.
Delta Force are promoting this tournament in conjunction with the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy.
“Titi (Mwadziwana) has been working very hard in the gym and he is looking sharp and ready for the fight.
“This is an international title bout and he is aware this is a very important event,” Musonda told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
Mwadziwana has already promised to dish out a sumptuous boxing dish in the Mashonaland East town.
“He is a former World Boxing Federation champion and he is eager to reclaim the belt.
“I am confident he will do well and make us proud.
“To the boxing fans, I am urging them to come in their thousands. I know people from Chivhu love their boxing and the town has always been a boxing town,” added Musonda.
Mwadziwana, who is also a former national champion, has been bullish ahead of this fight.
“I don’t want to say much now, but I am certain I will win.
“Let’s wait for Saturday,” said Mwadziwana.
Weigh-in is at Phil Jen Country Lodges in Chivhu today.
Some of the international boxers who are fighting include the highly rated Simon Ngoma of Zambia.
Ngoma is the top ranked Lightweight boxer in Africa.
Several Zimbabwean boxers including former Africa Boxing Union Lightweight champion Aliyah Phiri are also taking part.
