IN a bid to enhance food handling standards in the City of Mutare ahead of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, the local authority, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, conducted a food safety training programme for food handlers from various hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and other food outlets.

A total of 27 participants received certificates upon successfully completing the two-day training programme last Friday.

The training was aimed at improving hygienic practices and food handling standards across the city’s hospitality industry.

Acting Mutare City Health Director, Mrs Eunice Muyambuki described the initiative as a significant step forward in advancing Mutare’s food service sector ahead of the international expo.

“We are hosting the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo in September, which is a key reason for prioritising improved food handling standards in Mutare. With an expected influx of tourists, this training will help mitigate the risk of food poisoning incidents. This is merely the initial phase, where 11 food business operators nominated 27 employees for the programme. We encourage all food outlets to send their staff for this crucial training,” she said.

Mrs Muyambuki said the training seeks to enhance operational standards, kitchen safety, and public trust in the hospitality sector.

“The initiative goes beyond mere regulatory compliance; it is about elevating service quality across the province. We believe the knowledge and skills imparted during the workshop will lead to safer kitchen environments, better food handling practices, and more consistent hygiene protocols. Ultimately, this will safeguard public health, foster customer confidence, and enhance the competitiveness of our local hospitality industry,” she said.

The training brought together chefs, kitchen staff, and hospitality students on industrial attachment from various establishments.

Mrs Muyambuki said the training was part of a broader effort to promote compliance with national food safety laws – and covered topics like personal and kitchen hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination prevention, and adherence to public health regulations, outlined in the Public Health Act and the Food Standards Act.

Manicaland Provincial Medical Director, Dr Munyaradzi Mukuzunga emphasised the vital role food handlers play in protecting public health.

“Food safety is essential for safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our communities. As food handlers, you are on the frontline of preventing foodborne illnesses, which can be life-threatening, particularly for children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. This training has equipped you, not only with practical skills, but also with a deep sense of responsibility. Your daily commitment to hygiene, proper storage, and safe preparation techniques can prevent disease outbreaks, build lasting trust with your customers, and most importantly, save lives,” he said.

Dr Mukuzunga also commended the participating businesses for taking food safety seriously.

The initiative received widespread praise from stakeholders for promoting higher standards and professionalism in the food service industry.

Manica Skyview Hotel administrator, Mrs Shumirai Madzivire welcomed the training, highlighting its value to the hospitality sector.

“Our chefs and kitchen staff gained updated food safety knowledge, which is crucial for a facility serving, both local and international guests. Having certified staff gives us a competitive edge, as customers trust businesses that invest in training and safety,” she said.
